Hydrant Tampering

It was recently discovered that a hydrant on Greenwood Street had been tampered with – the cap had been removed and rocks were found inside the hydrant.

Tampering with hydrants can have dangerous consequences. Removing the caps and inserting rocks or other debris can render a hydrant or firefighting equipment inoperable during a time when it was needed most. It can cost someone their house or even their life.

Opening a hydrant without the right tools can damage the hydrant. The only people authorized to open a hydrant are members of the Town’s Fire Department and Public Works Department.

If you see anyone tampering with a hydrant, please call the Public Works emergency line at 277-1402 or the Fire Chief at 277-3015 and report it.

Ensuring everyone’s safety is our number one priority – please think twice before tampering with a hydrant!
