Residents are reminded not to feed the ducks (or crows and any other sea birds), which causes them to unnaturally congregate.
In addition to the associated issues noted in previous reminders, such as their dependence on humans, over population and harm to personal property, there is now the added concern of avian flu.
Avian flu has been confirmed in all four Atlantic provinces, including Newfoundland and the Marystown-Burin area, and it is possible, be it rare, for it to be transmitted to humans. Residents are asked not to feed the ducks as the virus is spread through direct contact with infected birds, even through contact with clothing, footwear, etc.
Please report dead birds or birds acting strangely to the Wildlife Emergency Number at 709-685-7273.
