Flags Lowered for Mr. Albert Dober

Our flags are lowered today in honour of Mr. Albert Dober, who passed away yesterday. Mr. Dober was a life-long volunteer who had a great love for his community and fellow residents.

In the 1970s and 80s, Mr. Dober was Chair of the Burin Peninsula Hospital Committee which successfully advocated for a hospital for the Burin Peninsula. He later served on the Burin Hospital Board and Provincial Health Board.

In early 70’s he was a committee member for the paving of the Burin Peninsula.

Mr. Dober, along with Mr. Con Fitzpatrick and Mr. Gerard Cheeseman wrote the history of Marystown.

Mr. Dober had many, many other achievements including:

• founding member of the Heritage Run Tourism Association

• founding member of the joint Town Council

• Committee member for original Visitor Information Centre

• Board member for Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador

• served on the Board of Directors for the Rooms

• served on Newfoundland Hospital and Nursing Homes Association

• served on Newfoundland and Labrador Health Care Foundation Board Clinic

• Chair of Marystown Memorial Library Board

• Chair of the Marystown Museum

• Member of the Burin-Bonavista Regional Library Board

• Newfoundland Public Library Services Board member

• Burin-Marystown (now Burin Peninsula) Chamber of Commerce founding member

• Board member for Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador

• Provincial Information and Library committee

• Historian for the Chamber of Commerce community pride committee

• Director for Marystown Community Living Foundation

• Eastern Representative on the Provincial Alcohol and Drug Dependency Commission

• served on the Burin Peninsula Branch of the Newfoundland and Labrador Association for Adult Educators

• volunteer with Sacred Heart Parish

• Burin Peninsula voluntary clusters project committee member

• instrumental role in a senior needs assessment resulting in the establishment of the Kinsmen Manor residence for seniors

For his efforts he has received:

• Senior of Distinction Award

• Lifetime membership recipient from Museum Association of Newfoundland and Labrador

• honoured for volunteerism by retired Teachers Association of Newfoundland and Labrador – “When Albert Dober makes a commitment to an organization you can take it to the bank.”

• recognized for Lifetime service to Red Cross Society

• 1985 Marystown Citizen of the year

• 2017 Lifetime volunteer award from the Town of Marystown
